ABS Academic & Research Committee Endorsement Letter for Grant Funding Applications
The Academic and Research Committee are happy to review requests for an endorsement letter to support research grant applications. The requesting person should hold an ABS membership (any category). Please email lenasebova@absgbi.org.uk with a short summary (no longer than 500 words) about your research study which will be forwarded to the Academic and Research Committee for review. The request for an endorsement letter will be reviewed by 4 members of the Academic and Research Committee. Please allow 4 weeks in order to enable the committee to review your request.
Special consideration will be given to research proposals in topic areas identified as a research priority by the ABS Gap Analysis. Please include any previous evidence of research proposal peer review and/or outcome (e.g. by the NCRI Breast Cancer Clinical Studies Group / UK Breast Intergroup). We also strongly encourage the applicant to present the research study proposal at the ABS Research Sandpit for advice on further design, development, and funding.
Personal Awards and Fellowships
The Royal College of Surgeons of England, Edinburgh and Glasgow all provide personal awards and fellowships. These awards usually provide salary and limited funding to cover consumables.
NIHR Funding Streams
The National Institute for Health Research aims to 'Improve the health and wealth of the nation through research' and funds a range of programmes addressing a broad range of health priorities. NIHR aims to produce evidence that enables professionals, policy makers and patients to make informed decisions about healthcare and provide the means to turn new interventions into better care. The NIHR also funds career development for researchers whose work focuses on people.
The ABS is an NIHR non-commercial partner, following self declaration by the organisation. Appropriate research studies funded through the ABS' eligible funding streams are automatically eligible for NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN) support and therefore entitled to:
- Use the NIHR Coordinated System for gaining NHS Permissions (NIHR CSP) which is accessed via the Integrated Research Application System (IRAS)
- Access NHS support via the NIHR Clinical Research Network
National Cancer Research Institute
The NCRI's 'Surgeons guide to research and funding' provides an excellent overview of funding opportunities available to surgeons.
